Flugantia’s Rigel research project won the 17th Best Practices for Innovation Award in the Digitalisation category (Connecting Ideas, Territories and People).
Recognising Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The Best Practices for Innovation Award was established in 2006 by the Innovative and Technological Services Group of Confindustria Salerno.
Creativity and cross-fertilisation are the core principles of the initiative, which promotes a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across Italy by encouraging the exchange of successful projects between companies, university spin-offs and start-ups.
Through the stories of the innovators behind each project, the award highlights innovative solutions and the tangible results they deliver. Finalists have the opportunity to present their projects to a qualified audience during a two-day event dedicated to innovation, technology and business development.
Over the years, the award has become a meeting point where the demand for innovation meets innovative solutions, creating valuable partnerships and contributing to the growth of a vibrant innovation ecosystem.
The initiative has also achieved important recognition at the European level, becoming a candidate for the 2019 European Enterprise Promotion Awards organised by the European Commission to celebrate outstanding initiatives that promote entrepreneurship.
The Rigel Research Project
RIGEL (Research and Innovation for Logistics Management) was designed as an Industrial IoT solution for the digital management of waste collection equipment.
The project focused on monitoring:
- container fill levels;
- container location through GPS tracking;
- the correct use of roll-off containers for different types of waste.
Its objective was to improve waste container logistics by providing real-time visibility into operational assets and supporting more efficient logistics planning.
The system included configurable web-based user interfaces that allowed operators to monitor assets, visualise operational data and customise dashboards according to their specific needs.
From Rigel to Twin Control
Rigel became the technological foundation of today’s Twin Control platform.
The project introduced the first building blocks of what has evolved into a comprehensive waste container management platform, integrating Industrial IoT, asset intelligence and Digital Twin technologies to support waste equipment management and logistics optimisation.
The research project concluded with the filing of an industrial invention patent, confirming the innovative value of the technologies developed by Flugantia.
